Hama is famous for its massive ancient wooden water wheels (norias) on the Orontes River — some dating back over 2,000 years. The sound they make is unique and unforgettable.
The Norias (waterwheels) are giant wooden wheels that have been spinning on the Orontes River for centuries. Hama's Norias are the largest in the world and their creaking sound is a city icon.
The wooden Norias, Hama Citadel, Al-Azem Palace, the public gardens along the Orontes River, and the nearby Roman ruins of Apamea.
Hama is approximately 210km from Damascus, about 2.5 hours by car.
Spring (March–May) when the Orontes River is full and the Norias spin beautifully. Autumn is also pleasant.
